4 Resources if You're Pregnant and Need Help Paying for Groceries

If you’re pregnant and need help paying for groceries, you might be wondering if you can afford to parent a baby. Adoption is an opportunity to get the financial support you need and provide a bright future for your baby.

Choosing adoption doesn’t mean you’re “giving up” on your baby. One of the most selfless, loving things you can do is give your baby a fulfilling life with an adoptive family. It’s a courageous decision that demonstrates your unwilling commitment to your baby’s well-being.

“I knew that she would have everything I knew she deserved. She would have amazing opportunities for education, she would have a loving and devoted family and be able to travel and see this amazing world we live in.” –Brittnee, birth mother

4 Food Assistance Programs for Pregnant Women in Colorado

There are a variety of food assistance programs for pregnant women, including adoption financial support. Here are four Colorado programs that provide free food for pregnant moms:

1. Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children

In Colorado, you can apply for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) if you’re pregnant. The program also applies to moms who are breastfeeding children under 1, women who gave birth or were pregnant in the past 6 months, children under 5, and newborns. Citizenship is not an eligibility requirement.

The WIC program offers free food for pregnant moms. You can also get nutrition education, referrals to additional care and breast pumps and other breastfeeding support. The program’s goal is to help families lead healthier lives.

2. The Emergency Food Assistance Program

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) provides American-grown foods to low-income households. To qualify, you must meet TEFAP’s income guidelines or already be part of one of nine other programs.

There is no formal application, interview or verification for this program. All you need to do is bring identification and a piece of mail showing your county to a food pantry that participates in TEFAP. This can be a great food assistance program for pregnant women.

3. Colorado Food Pantries

Food pantries are nonprofit organizations or charitable institutions that accept and distribute food to people in need. In terms of eligibility, some may ask about your income or require identification or proof of residency. However, exact guidelines can vary between food pantries.

If you need immediate assistance with groceries, this could be the best option for you. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has a list of Colorado food pantries, but you can also search online for smaller centers and free food for pregnant moms.

4. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The U.S. offers food benefits through its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Eligibility for the program depends on two main factors: your household size and gross monthly income. You can apply for SNAP online, through the MyCOBenefits mobile app, by calling Hunger Free Colorado or by filling out a paper application.

The program was previously known as the Food Stamp Program because the government would give people paper stamps to redeem for food. However, monthly allowances are now distributed to an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card which SNAP provides. You can use the EBT card if you’re pregnant and need help paying for groceries.
