Rent Assistance for Pregnant Mothers in Colorado

Housing is a basic human need, and it shouldn’t be something you’re worried about while deciding what to do about the pregnancy. Here’s how to get help with housing when you’re pregnant:

1. Eviction Resources

Facing the threat of eviction can be highly stressful. If you’re pregnant and need help with rent, there are a few resources that provide eviction assistance in Colorado.

  • Colorado Legal Services can help with eviction cases for low-income families. You can reach out to your local office for more information about the cases they accept.

  • The Colorado Emergency Rental Assistance Program can help cover up to 15 months of current or overdue rent payments. To be eligible for this program, you must have been served with a court summons for forcible entry and detainer.

  • If you need eviction prevention services, Colorado Housing Connects can provide you with the right contact information.

  • In Colorado, you can dial 211 and ask about rent payment assistance or emergency shelter. The operators will be able to connect you to the resources you need.

2. Programs to Help Pregnant Mothers With Housing

Are you pregnant and need housing? You have two options for affordable housing in Colorado: public housing or the Housing Choice Voucher Program (which is also known as Section 8). A local Public Housing Agency (PHA) can help you apply to either one.

  • Public housing is designated for low-income families, the elderly and people with disabilities. These buildings are managed by PHAs and built by the U.S. government. You may qualify for public housing depending on your income, citizenship status, age and disability condition.

  • The Housing Choice Voucher Program helps low-income families, the elderly and people with disabilities afford housing in the private market. With a voucher, you can choose any apartment, townhouse or home that participates in the program. Eligibility depends on your income, family size, citizenship status, age and disability condition.

3. Low-Income Energy Assistance Program

Winters in Colorado can get pretty chilly depending on where you live. If you need help with rent while pregnant and are struggling to pay your home heating bill, you can receive assistance through the Colorado Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). This program can partially cover your heating costs from November through April.

Eligibility for LEAP is determined by your income. If you make no more than 60% of Colorado’s median income, you can qualify. You can call 1-8666-HEAT-HELP for more information.
