It was most helpful to me when I had someone to talk to who would just listen to me without making any judgements or conclusions about who I was as a person.” –Michelle, birth mother

What Is Unplanned Pregnancy Counseling?

Unplanned pregnancy counseling refers to professional support and guidance provided to individuals facing unexpected pregnancies. It aims to help you explore your options, understand the implications of each choice (such as parenting, adoption or abortion) and make informed decisions based on your personal circumstances.

Unplanned pregnancy counseling typically includes emotional support, information about available resources and services and non-judgmental guidance to navigate the complexities of an unplanned pregnancy.

Unplanned Pregnancy Counseling With American Adoptions of Colorado

Because our adoption counselors’ roles go beyond offering emotional support, we call them “adoption specialists.” You can speak with one of our adoption specialists at any time. Our hotline is free and available 24/7 even if you don’t choose adoption.

Here’s what our adoption specialists can help you with:

Processing Your Emotions

Unplanned pregnancies are a shock, so you might be feeling scared, angry, sad or hopeful. It can be hard to cope with these emotions on your own. Our adoption specialists can help you process your feelings and determine what to do next.

“The test came back positive, and I was in disbelief. So, I took the test again, and it was still positive. Immediately after being hit with the facts, my heart sank. In that moment, all I could do was cry and panic. I had a lot of thoughts going through my head, trying to figure out what I was going to do with my unborn daughter.” –Chauniece, birth mother

Pregnancy Options Counseling

In Colorado, you have three unplanned pregnancy options:

  • Parenting. You will need to prepare for the emotional, financial and logistical aspects of parenting if you decide to raise your child.

  • Adoption. You can choose your baby’s adoptive family, plan your hospital stay and decide what level of post-placement contact you’d like if you move forward with adoption.

  • Abortion. If you want to get an abortion in Colorado, there are no term restrictions, mandatory waiting periods or parental consent laws for minors.

We can provide more information about each one to help you make an informed decision.

Determining Whether Adoption Is Best

Although we are a licensed adoption agency, our counseling services are unbiased. We don’t think adoption is the right path for every expectant parent, and we aren’t affiliated with any religions or belief systems that would influence our support.

We won’t try to convince you to pick a certain option because every woman’s situation is different. Our adoption specialists can lend an ear and explain your options, but they will not tell you what to do. Only you know what’s best for your future.

Navigating Communication With Family and Friends

No matter which option you choose, you can benefit from having a support system. Think through which family members, friends and people in your life will support your choice. Our adoption specialists can help you figure out what to say to them regarding your unplanned pregnancy decision.

We understand that these conversations can be difficult. If someone doesn’t support your decision, you don’t need to involve them in anything else related to your unplanned pregnancy option. Focus on those who will offer you the understanding and encouragement you need during this time.

Finding the Perfect Adoptive Family

If you decide to move forward with adoption, you can choose the ideal adoptive family for your baby. We have hundreds of profiles you can view online, but your adoption specialist can also send you a curated selection based on your preferences.

Looking for someone to adopt your baby?

“Seven and a half months into the pregnancy, my adoption specialist sent me a packet with 8-10 profiles of couples wanting to adopt. In that group of profiles, I read Paul and Becky’s and knew I’d found my child’s parents. They had everything I was looking for.” –Kelly, birth mother
